A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group stand trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or are in custody.”
